The short answer: for long shifts on hard floors, look for cushioning, arch support, a low heel and a secure fit. Then add what your job needs: slip resistance for kitchens, hospitals and wet floors, or a safety toe on a worksite. And check your workplace’s footwear rules before you buy.

Why standing all day is so hard on your feet

The Australian Podiatry Association says walking and standing for long periods puts up to twice your body weight through your feet and legs with every step, and pain in the heel, the balls of the feet and the arches is common. Hard surfaces such as concrete make it worse — they have no give, so cushioned soles help absorb the shock.

What to look for in a work shoe

The Australian Podiatry Association’s guide to work footwear, written with workwear brand KingGee, lists six things:

  • Support — proper arch and heel support to reduce fatigue.
  • Protection — toe caps, slip-resistant soles or electrical safety ratings, depending on your worksite.
  • Fit — a good fit can prevent injuries, not just discomfort.
  • Durability — quality materials last longer.
  • Cushioning — in the heel and ball of the foot, to absorb shock.
  • Weight — lighter shoes are easier to move in all day.

For hard floors, Victoria’s Better Health Channel adds: choose supportive shoes, preferably lace-up, with softer soles and innersoles, and consider arch supports to spread the load. The Podiatry Association also recommends lower heels.

Slip-resistant shoes for nurses, hospitality and retail

Skechers’ Work range includes slip-resistant styles, and several pair that with the Arch Fit insole or memory foam cushioning (see our Arch Fit explainer for what Skechers says about it).

Work clogs and food-service shoes

Crocs’ Bistro and Neria Pro work clogs are listed as slip-resistant, and the Neria Pro II listing names healthcare and food service — and recommends sizing up if you’re between sizes (see our Crocs size guide). Skechers’ Nampa is a food-service shoe, and FILA’s Memory Workshift is listed as slip-resistant.

Safety boots: steel or composite toe?

According to the Podiatry Association’s guide with KingGee, composite toe caps meet the same safety standards as steel — they’re lighter, and because they’re metal-free they don’t conduct electricity, which suits electrical work.

Check the standard your workplace requires. The current Australian safety-footwear standard is AS 2210.3:2019. Many boots sold on Amazon quote US (ASTM) ratings instead, and a US rating isn’t automatically the same thing. If your employer specifies Australian-certified footwear, confirm it on the listing or with the seller before you buy.

How to fit safety boots

The safety cap makes safety boots harder to fit. The Podiatry Association’s method:

  1. Take out the footbed and put it on a flat surface.
  2. Stand on it with your heel in the heel cup.
  3. Check there’s at least 10 mm between your longest toe and the end of the footbed.
  4. Repeat for both feet — and fit the boot to your larger foot.

Also: measure at the end of the day, try boots on with your work socks, make sure your heel feels secure, and walk, squat and flex in them before deciding. The guide also notes that women’s feet generally differ from men’s — a wider forefoot, narrower heel and higher arch — so a boot designed for women may give better support and fit.

Wide-fit and slip-on work shoes

If standard widths pinch, Skechers makes several work styles in wide fits, plus hands-free Slip-ins — the width or Slip-ins is in each product’s name.

Get through a long shift

  • Change position often so no one muscle group takes all the strain (Australian Podiatry Association).
  • Alternate your shoes day to day — it varies the load on your feet and lets shoes dry out (Better Health Channel).
  • Consider insoles or orthotics. Off-the-shelf insoles add comfort; a podiatrist can prescribe custom ones.
  • See a podiatrist if heel, arch or ball-of-foot pain keeps coming back.

Quick answers

What are the best shoes for standing all day on concrete?

Supportive, preferably lace-up shoes with cushioned, softer soles and good arch support — the Better Health Channel’s advice for hard surfaces.

Are composite toe boots as safe as steel?

According to the Podiatry Association’s guide with KingGee, yes — composite caps meet the same standards, and they’re lighter and non-conductive.

What shoes do nurses wear in Australia?

Hospitals set their own rules, so check your policy first. Common choices are slip-resistant, cushioned shoes that are easy to clean — such as work sneakers and work clogs.

Do US-rated safety boots meet Australian standards?

Not automatically. The current Australian standard is AS 2210.3:2019; if your employer requires it, confirm the boot is certified to it.
